Hamilton — A Quiet Town with a Long Memory
Settled in the 1730s and originally known as Harmony, Hamilton sits between Leesburg and Purcellville along the old Leesburg Turnpike. By the late 19th century, the arrival of the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad had turned it into Loudoun's second-largest town — a popular weekend escape for Washingtonians fleeing the city's summer heat, complete with a 1.5-mile boardwalk and a dance hall. A devastating 1926 fire reshaped the commercial core, but the town's residential character survived intact.
Today Hamilton is a small, settled community of approximately 600 — historic homes along Colonial Highway, established residential streets, and surrounding country properties on the south side of Catoctin Mountain. With Route 7 bypassing the town just to the north, Hamilton retains a quiet, residential rhythm few Northern Virginia communities have managed to preserve.
